Fissure Sealants

As a parent, you will want to do all you can to protect your children’s teeth from dental decay. Some children’s’ teeth are particularly susceptible to attack from harmful mouth acid, which can result in cavities. Fissure sealants are used to prevent this damage and can be placed as soon as the teeth erupt into the mouth.

Fissure sealants are bonded onto the vulnerable tooth surfaces, protecting the fissures from acid attack. The treatment is carried out when your child reaches the age of 6 and again at 11 when the first and second adult molars come through.

You will be guided as to whether this would be an appropriate treatment for your child at the time of their examinations. When placed, we expect that the sealants will need some maintenance/replacement through your child’s developmental years to ensure that they are functioning optimally.

Can people of any age have Fissure Sealants?

Age needn’t stop you from protecting the vulnerable surfaces of your teeth as you can have sealants placed in adulthood. Commonly these are applied to wisdom teeth, which become stagnant at the back corners of the mouth.
